To influence indirectly

Background

Audiences love stories.  While my speaking career was the teaching of technical
seminars, student evaluations always noted stories.  The hero's journey as detailed
in The Hero with a Thousand faces, by Joseph Campbell, is my favorite story model.

The Hero Journey Model

The Call (Opening:  An invitation to adventure):  "My boss called me into his office and said, 'Gordon, you're being laid off.'  I didn't know what to do.  My best friend said,
'Start your own business, you'll never be laid off.'"

Answering the Call (Middle: The adventure):  "I did and for the next fifteen years I developed and delivered seminars on communications networks, mainly the Internet.  Along the way I joined the National Speakers Association where I evolved from
speaker to explainer, a personal achievement beyond my dreams."

The Hero's Return (Closing:  The personal benefit achieved):  "I wish I knew who
said, "not everything that happens is good, but good can come from the bad that
happens.  It did for me.  May it be so for you as well."
